- Dia dhuit! [la noia a l’altra banda del taulell somriu i això m’encoratja] Ba mhaith liom ... [merda, no sé som se diu!]... “seafood chowder” agus sconaí... agus uisce, le do thoil!
- Go raibh maith agat!

* Literalment: "Irlandés i benvingut".

The sticker at the door is very clear. I’ve been staring at the board with the menu for half an hour. Don’t get me wrong, I know what I am going to have since the moment I’ve read “seafood chowder”. But I’m trying to figure out how to order that... Got it!

- Dia dhuit! [the waitress smiles and that gives me that little push that I need] Ba mhaith liom ... [shit, I don’t know the word for that]... “seafood chowder” agus sconaí... agus uisce, le do thoil!
I understand her when she tells me how to get myself some water. OK, the fact that she is pointing in the right direction might help.
- Go raibh maith agat!

I am proud of myself: it’s the first time I actually say something in Irish to someone I don´t know.

Right. It wasn’t a long conversation, but it was a start, wasn’t it?

Ceardlann, the Craft and Design Centre, is located at Spideal, a tiny Gaeltacht village near Gaillimh (Galway) and offers you a selection of craft shops and a little “bistró”.

* Literally: "Irish and welcome". If you find this sticker at the door of any shop, it means they encourage you to order in Irish.
