Un raig de sol de migdia em va despertar. A poc a poc, vaig anar obrint-me a un dia que ja començava a ser vell. Les parets que m’envoltaven, abans fredes i humides, ja havien començat a escalfar-se. Tot assaborint la meua sensació de triomf per ser la primera en llevar-me, vaig tancar els ulls i em vaig oferir a la llum que s’escolava per les esquerdes...

De sobte, quelcom es va interposar entre el sol i jo, tot bloquejant la llum de la que, moments abans, disfrutava. Un noi jove, els cabells llargs i esbullats, em mirava i somreia. El seus ulls em parlaven d’una mar embravida, d’ones trencant contra una costa rocallosa, de cares i bescolls cremats per un sol inesperat però benvingut, de cims erms escombrats pel vent, d’un paisatge gris i esquerdat com un bloc gegantí de llevat, d’antics forts de pedra mig enderrocats, d’una badia amb mil i una cales, de muntanyes llunyanes, de la troballa que tot just havia fet... jo.

L’aparició es va esvair tan ràpidament com havia vingut. Em vaig estirar tant com vaig poder, volia saber més de totes aquestes coses! Però les meues arrels no em varen deixar guaitar per sobre de les parets de roca...

Paciència. Amb una mica de temps creixeré i podré guaitar. I veure els ocells que escolte cantar al matí i al capvespre. I olorar el perfum de les meues germanes, que sento créixer a prop meu, en altres escletxes. I sentir als meus pètals la brisa de la mar. I... i...

Els millors mesos per disfrutar el contrast entre la duresa de la roca del Burren i les flors que sorgeixen d’entre les seues esquerdes són maig i juny. Per més informació sobre aquesta meravella paisatgística, el centre interactiu d’interpretació del Burren, BurrenBeo, ofereix informació d’una manera amena i alhora rigorosa. El millor lloc per estar-s’hi és la vila de Doolin, on sovint trobes una sessió de música tradicional en algun dels seus tres pubs. Especialment recomanable és l'Aille River Hostel, on Karl et dona la benvinguda amb un somriure d’orella a orella i una pila d’informació sobre els voltants.

I was awaken by the midday sun. Slowly, I let myself open to a day that was already growing old, warming the stone walls around me. I was the first to leave my sleep and enjoy the warmth and the light that came through the cracks in the rock...

Suddenly, a shadow fell over me. A young lad, his long hair untied and blown by the wind, was looking at me wearing a smile on his face. His eyes told me of a raging sea, of waves breaking against a rocky shore, of sunburnt skin under a welcome but unexpected sun, of barren submits blown by the wind, of a rugged and craked landscape like an apple crumble, of old decaying forts, of a bay with a thousand inlets, of distant mountains, of the treasure he had just discovered... myself.

He fade away as soon as he came. I tried to look over the edge of the rock, I wanted to learn more! But my roots woudn’t let me...

But I’ll be patient. I will grow and I will be able to glance to the world behind the rock. And see the birds that sing morning and night. And smell the perfume of my sisters, growing in nearby hides. And feel the see breeze in my petals... And...

June and May are the best months to enjoy the flowered landscape of the Burren. BurrenBeo provides easy reading but reliable information about this natural monument. The best place to stay to explore the Burren is Doolin, where you’ll probably find a trad session in one of the three pubs. I recomend specially Aille River Hostel, where you will receive a welcoming smile from Karl and lots of information on the surroundings.
